Kokomo's waste water treatment plant

Yep, we're back at it, with another tour of another waste water treatment plant.  This time, we headed up to Kokomo to take a look at their facility.

The City of Kokomo, using grant funds from our office, installed variable frequently drives (VFDs) on their existing 600hp blowers.  These blowers provide oxygen to their single stage nitrification activated sludge system.  Dissolved oxygen meters were installed in the sludge system to monitor oxygen levels, which are used to control the output of the blowers via the VFDs.  (It's a mouthful, we know!)

Bottom line is, these actions help save quite a bit of energy and reduce the demand charges.  Total savings are estimated at a whopping $115,000 annually!

The City of Kokomo received an Energy Efficiency for Wastewater Treatment (EEWT) grant.  This program was funded through the U.S. Department of Energy's State Energy Program (SEP), administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED).

Batesville WWTP

Occasionally, OED's staff gets to visit wastewater treatment facilities.  It's not nearly as exciting as a wind farm, but water and wastewater treatment facilities consume quite a bit of energy.  So when we have the chance to help out, we do.

Batesville was the recipient of a 2010 grant from OED under our Energy Efficiency for Wastewater Treatment Facilities.   Seven of the city's motors had been operating for nearly thirty years, so an upgrade was long overdue!

These seven motors were replaced with newer, high efficiency motors, four of which are aerator motors and three of which are lift station motors.  Electricity consumption dropped significantly with the installation of these motors, decreasing by 12%.  Coupled with the 24% of process energy already saved by the plant through implementation of strategies such as sleep modes, the city is saving quite a bit of money.

Town of Brownsburg visit

When it comes to a wastewater treatment plant, cleanliness and efficiency doesn't usually come straight to mind.  One of our grant recipients, the Town of Brownsburg, is actively working toward this goal by using funds received from OED's Energy Efficiency for Wastewater Treatment Facilities program (EEWT).

Partially funded by a $72,235 EEWT grant, the town purchased new premium efficiency motors.  These new motors replaced outdated motors, including a 22-year old, 100 horsepower high service pump, and four 25-year old, 50 horsepower electrical motors.  These upgrades will have a positive and lasting effect on the environment, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and will help Brownsburg save some taxpayer dollars.

Thanks to all the Brownsburg employees for allowing us to visit.  We look forward to hearing more great things about the work you're doing over there!
