Biomass R&D Initiative

The Dept. of Energy just released a fairly large opportunity to the tune of $3 million to $7 million total per award (total, not each year) for biomass research and development.  Eligible entities include institutions of higher education, private sector entities, and/or non-profits.

DOE wants all three technical topic areas to be proposed, so if your company is interested, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to form a consortium or partnerships to make sure you fulfill all requirements.  Here are the areas:
  • Feedstocks development - research, development, and demonstration regarding feedstocks and feedstock logistics, including harvest, handling, transport, preprocessing, and storage, relevant to production of raw materials for conversion to biofuels, bioenergy, and bio-based products
  • Biofuels & bio-based products development - research, development, and demonstration activities for development of diverse cost-effective tcehnologies for the use of cellulosic biomass in the prosecution of biofuels, bioenergy, and bio-based products, and product diversification relevant to production of bio-based products (chemicals, animal feeds, cogeneration power)
  • Biofuels & bio-based products development analysis - methods to qualify the technology and/or positive impact on sustainability and the environment; study environmental, social, and economic implications
Pre-applications are due May 31st.  An invited full application is due October 4th.
